Based on the Subgrade Rutting Criteria Formule
NR = 4.1656 X 10 -08 [1/εv] 4.5337 (for 80 % reliability)
NR = 1.4100 X 10 -08 [1/εv] 4.5337 (for 90 % reliability)
where NR = Subgrade rutting life (Cumulative Equivalent number of 80 KN Standard axle loads that can be served by pavement before the critical rut depth of 20 mm or more occurs)
εv = Vertical Compressive Strain at the top of the subgrade calculated using linear layered theory by applying standard axle load at the surface of the selected pavement
The critical vertical compressive strain for a design traffic can be calucated as below
Design Traffic in MSA = 15.00 MSA
Critical Compressive strain using 80 % reliability
Critical Compressive strain using 90 % reliability
Based on the Fatigue Cracking Criteria Formule for bituminous layer
Fatigue Life of Bituminous layer in terms of repetative standard axles (Nf)
Nf = 1.6064*C*10-04[1/εt]3.89*[1/MRM]0.854 (for 80 % reliability)
Nf = 0.5161*C*10-04[1/εt]3.89*[1/MRM]0.854 (for 90 % reliability)
C = 10M and M = 4.84*(vbe/(va+vbe)-0.69)
va = percent volume of air void in the mix used in bottom bituminous layer
vbe = percent volume of effective bitumen in the mix used in bottom bituminous layer
εt = Maximum horizontal tensile strain at the bottom of bottom bituminous layer
MRM = Resilient Modulus (MPa) of bituminous mix used in the bottom bituminous layer selected as per the recommendations made in these guidelines
So in order to calculate the CRITICAL HORIZONTAL STRAIN at the bottom of the
bottom bituminous layer for the Mix with following values
Design Traffic in MSA
MRM = 2500 MPa From Table 9.2
Therefore C= 10^(4.84*(vbe/(va+vbe)-0.69))= 3.15515493
εt = 0.0003649185824 (for 80 % reliability)
εt = 0.00027254 (for 90 % reliability)
As per IIT pave Critical Compressive strain is 0.0004181 which is less than 0.000615582 for 80% reliability & 0.00084749 for 90% reliability , Hence safe
As per IIT pave Max.horizontal strain is 0.0002610 which is less than 0.000364919 for 80% reliability & 0.00027254 for 90% reliability ,Hence safe
