Cleaning
Carrying out pre-cleaning examination and test patches to determine suitable cleaning methodology compatible with original materials, gentle dry surface cleaning using soft brushes, micro-vacuum, or conservation-grade tools to remove loose dust and deposits without disturbing original paint layers, controlled wet/chemical cleaning using approved conservation solutions, swabs, or gels and localized cleaning of sensitive or fragile areas using minimal intervention techniques.
Filling and filleting
Preparation of lacunae and edges by careful cleaning and stabilization of surrounding original plaster and paint layers prior to filling operations. Providing compatible lime-based or conservation-grade filling to losses in plaster, cracks, and voids, matched in texture and level to adjacent surfaces without covering original paint layers. Executing filleting of edges to secure fragile boundaries between original material and fills using fine tools and reversible conservation materials.
In painting and reintegration
Carrying out inpainting of losses using reversible, conservation-grade pigments and binders to visually integrate lacunae without covering original historic material. Executing chromatic reintegration using distinguishable conservation techniques (e.g., tratteggio/ neutral toning) to achieve visual harmony at normal viewing distance while remaining identifiable upon close inspection.
Reattachment of loose elements
Identification and marking of hollow or detached plaster areas through careful tapping and visual inspection prior to treatment, preparation of injection points and cleaning of voids to facilitate bonding without disturbing original paint or plaster layers. Injection of compatible lime-based or conservation-grade grouts/adhesives to reattach loose plaster to the substrate using controlled methods and pressure and sealing and finishing of injection points to match surrounding surface without obscuring original fabric.
Stabilization of painting
Application of compatible conservation-grade consolidants to stabilize flaking or powdering paint layers using controlled methods to ensure penetration without altering appearance and proper protective coat to wall painting using conservation grade consolidant.
