sounding/tapping to identify unsound and deteriorated joints; raking out/removal of existing
mortar from joints to a minimum depth of 20–25 mm or till sound substrate (whichever is
more) by approved manual/mechanical means without damaging adjacent masonry;
removal of loose debris and thorough cleaning of joints and surrounding surface by high-
pressure water jetting to remove dust, laitance, algae and other deleterious materials; pre-
wetting of joints to saturated surface dry (SSD) condition prior to application; application of
suitable bonding coat of water-miscible epoxy (if recommended by manufacturer) to
enhance adhesion; and repointing the joints with high-performance cementitious mortar

of damaged, loose, cracked, delaminated and unsound concrete/masonry/mortar by
chiseling, cutting or other approved manual/mechanical methods to the required depth as
directed by the Engineer-in-Charge. Cleaning of lift joints, honeycombed areas and
potholes shall be carried out by breaking and trimming the edges. The prepared surface
shall be thoroughly cleaned using high-pressure water jetting at suitable pressure to
remove loose particles, laitance, organic matter, algae, fungi, marine growth and other
impurities to obtain a sound substrate suitable for repair. After surface preparation, a
bonding coat of special water-miscible epoxy primer suitable for bonding old
surface/concrete with new mortar shall be applied uniformly to achieve the required bond
strength. Subsequently, cementitious repair mortar (Based on EN 1504-3 Class R4) of
thickness 12 mm shall be applied, compacted and finished properly including filling of
potholes, honeycombed areas and irregularities as per manufacturer’s specifications and
directions of the Engineer-in-Charge. After completion of curing of the repair mortar, a
compatible crystalline/polymer protective coating of the same approved system shall be
applied over the repaired surface to provide additional waterproofing, durability and
protection against abrasion and chemical attack. The item shall include all materials,
labour, machinery, scaffolding, tools and plants, hire charges of equipments/cranes,
