CARTINGANDHANDLING:
Cast iron pipes fittings (specials) and valves with tail pieces shall be transported from
theMunicipal Stores or contractor’s stack yard to the work sites at places along the alignment
ofpipeline as directed by Owner /Engineer. The Contractor shall be responsible for the safety
ofpipes fitting and vales with tail pieces in transit loading/unloading. Every care shall be exercised
inhandling pipes and fittings to avoid damage. While unloading the pipes and fittings shall
withsteadying ropes of by any other means. Padding shall be provided between coated pipes
fittingsand skids to avoid damage to the coating Suitable gape between pipes should be lift at
intervals inorder to permit access from one side to the other. In case of spigot socket pipes care
betakenregardingorientationspipeswhileunloading.Asfaraspossiblepipesshallbeulnaaddedon one
side of the stretch only. The pipes shall be checked for any visible damage (such as brokenedges
cracking or spelling of pipe) while undo adding and shall be sorted out for reclamation anypipe
which shows sufficient damage to preclude it from being used shall be discarded shall
beprohibited. Necessary warning boards and lamps should be provided in front and side of pipes
toavoid any accident. Pipes should be stacked with sufficient packing to prevent rolling of the

Each stack of pipes shall contain only pipes of same class and size, with consignment
orbatch number marked on it with particulars of supplies wherever possible storage shall be

stable. The stack shall be in pyramid shape or the laid length wise and crosswise in
altimeterlayers. The pyramid stack shall be made for smaller diameter pipes for conserving space

The Contractor shall visit the before tendering and get himself acquainted site
conditionand the regulations regarding the laying of pipes in congested areas heavy traffics areas
etc. Thesuccessful bidder shall take the necessary permission and clearance of all the authorities
likedepartment ofads traffic water supply andthe drainage electricity broadtelephone
companyetc.Wherevernecessary.
Roadreinstatementshallnotbeincludedinbackfillingunlessspecified.
To protect person from injury and to avoid damage to property adequate
barricadesconstruction signs red lanterns and guards as required shall be placed and main lined
during theprogress of the construction work and unit it is safe for the traffics to use the roadways.
Therelevant Indian standards and the rules and regulations of the local authorities in regarded

General lighting for works site, warning lights, sign boards, fencing etc. shall be
providedbycontractorat hisown cost.
Suitable fencing shall be provided along the sides of trenches and pits. The post of
thefencing shall be of timber securely fixed in the ground not more then 3m.apart and they shall
beless than 75 mm in diameter of less than 1.2 m above the surface of the ground. There shall
betwo rails. One near the top of the post and the other about 450 mm. Above the ground and
eachshall be from 50mm to 70mm in diameter and sufficiently long to run from post to post
whichthey shall be bound with strong rope. The method of projecting rails beyond the posts and
tyingthem together where they meet will not be allowed on any account. All along the edges of
theexcavatedtrenchesabankofearthabout1.2.mhighshallbeformedasrequiredbytheOwner/Engine
er for further protection. The above work shall not be paid for separately and
thecontractorshalltakeintoaccountthecosts of suchworks andquoteaccordingly.
Whole work shall done within 24 hrs. by parts or whole work so that water supply
fromAMCshallnot bedisturbed.
The excavation in the foundation shall be carried out in true and level and shall have
thewidth and depth as required and as directed. The Contractor shall provide necessary slopes to
asafe angle or steps as required or directed at his own cost No extra payment shall be made
forsuch precautionary measures taken. The bottom of the excavated area shall be leveled
bothlongitudinally and transversely as directed by removing excess soil and watering as required.
Noearth filling will be allowed for bringing it to level if by mistake or any other reason excavation
ismade deeper or wider than as directed. The extra depth or width shall be made up with
concreteof the same proportion as specified for the foundation concrete at the cost of the
contractor. Theexcavation up to any required depth shall be carried out under this item as
required and directedbyengineerin charge.
SurfaceExcavationfor Road Work:
Excavation exceeding 1.5 mm in width and 10 sq mm on plan but not exceeding 30 cm
indepthinall kindsofsoilwhicharespecifiedshallbeastreatedas surfaceexcavation.
Excavationintrenchesforservicelines-Watersupplyand Drainage:
Excavation in trenches shall be carried out in any material encountered on the site
toenable the service lines to be laid to the lines and levels shown and as directed. Excavation
shallbe made with adequate and stable side slopes or shoring strutting if necessary. The
contractorshall provide all measures to protect adjoining properties service limes etc. The
contractor shalltakenecessaryaction tokeepexcavationfreefrom water.
Trenches shall be wide enough to provide sufficient space for joining and inspection.
Thetrench bed shall be trimmed and rammed with sprinkling of sand or murmur so that the
pipeswhen laid to the required levels and gradients shall be no the bottom fully supported along
theentire length of the pipe. The trench shall be deepened and widened locally to receive the
socketsandtopermitthejointtobemadeandinspected.
Beforeexcavationisstartedrailsshallbeerectedatconvenientplacesandatallchangesofdirectio
nandgradientsatadefiniteandasfaraspracticableuniformheightabovetheproposedinvertlevelofthep
ipesthecenterlimebeingclearlymarkedoneachhorizontalrail.The depth of excavation and level of
the pipe invert shall be checked by means of benching roadofappropriatelengths.
DisposaloftheExcavatedStuff:
The excavated stuff of the selected type shall be used for filling the trenches and plinth
orleveling the ground in layers including ramming and watering etc. complete. The Contractor
shallremove the balance of the excavated from the site of work to a place as directed within a
leadunto50mmand for alllift.
FilingofTrenches:
Assoonastheworkinfoundationhasbeencompletedandmeasuredthesidesoffoundation shall
be cleared of all dedans brick bats mortar dropping etc. and filled with earth
inlayersnotexceeding15cmEachlayershallbeadequatelywateredrammedwellandconsolidated
before the succeeding layer is laid. The earth shall be rammed with iron rammerswhere feasible
and with the butt ends in layer of crowbars where rammer cannot be used. Theplinth shall be
similarly filled with earth in layers not exceeding 15 cm adequately watered andconsolidated by
ramming with iron or wooden rammers. When filling reaches finished level thesurface shall be
flooded with water for at least 24 hours and allowed to dry and then rammed
andconsolidated.Thefinishedleveloffilingshallbekepttoshapeandgradientintendedtoreceive
anyfloorfinish.The excavatedstuff of the selected typeonlyshall be allowedtobe usedforfilling the
trenches and plinths. Under no circumstances black cotton soil shall be used for fillingtheplinths.
FILLINGMATERIALS:
Filling materials may be either excavated stuff of selected materials brought from
outside.Excavated stuff or selected earth to be used shall be cleared of all rubbish large size
stones brickbats etc. complete and big clods shall be broken down to a size of 50 mm or less. The
selected soilandor murmuroranyothermaterialsshallbegotapprovedbeforefilling.
Refillingshallbedoneinasystematicmannerbythecontractorbeforerefillingstarts,thecontractor shall
gotcheckedthetrenches readyforrefilling.
The space between foundation masonry concrete pipe line and the sides of
excavationand/or bottom of found at ion shall be refilled to the original surface or up to plinth
level withearthorselectedmaterialsinlayers of15 cmto20 cm eachwell wateredandrammed.
Each layer shall be watered and compacted with heavy rammer before the upper layer is laid
tillthefinal levelis reached toformathoroughlycompactedbase.
Refillingontopofpipe shallbecarriedoutcarefully withselectedsoftstuffoutoftheexcavated
stuff.Therefilling shallberaised about5 cams.Forsubsequentsettlements.
The contractor shall be responsible for any settlement during passage of time of during
monsoonandthe sameshallberefilled withstuffbrought from theout sideif necessary.
The process of refilling brunches in plinth watering ramming shall be carried out in such

If watering is not done by contractor with its own arrange meant watering charges at

The rubber ring shall be stored in a cool dark dry and dust free environment The
storageshall not be exposed to direct sunlight or any heat radiating appliance. The rings shall not
beallowedtocomeincontactwithanyfuels andshallbestoredfreeoftension.
Rubber rings shall be clearly labeled in bundles to indicate the type of ring. The size
ofpipes for which they are to be used the manufacturer’s name or trademark and the month
andtheyearofmanufacture.
The rings shall comply with IS 5382 regarding their material finish tolerance in
dimensionandphysicalrequirement.
The rubber rings shall be such that they shall not show any signs of deterioration for
anyreason during the contractperiod plus the defects liability period, Entire expenses
associatedwith correcting defects in this regard including replacement of rubber rings shall be
fully borne bythecontractor.
In jointing cast iron spigot and socket pipes and fitting with tycoon flexible joints
thecontractor shall take into account the manufacturer’s recommendations as to the methods
andequipment to be used in assembling the joints. In particular the contractor shall ensure that
thespigot end of the pipe to be jointed is smooth and has been properly chamfered that the
rubberring as per IS 5382 is correctly positioned in the socket and that the two pipes are
accurately inline, before the joint is made. The rubber rings and any recommended lubricant shall
be obtainedonlythrough thepipesupplieroras directed bytheEngineer.
LEADCALCULATINGJOINTS
The jointing shall be done with molten lead and spun yam. Pin lead shall be of
uniformquality clean and free from foreign materials. It shall be of uniform softness capable of
beingeasily caulked or driven. It shall conform to IS: 782 Spun yarn shall be of clean hemp and of

Lead shall be heated in a melting pot kept in easy reach of the joint to be poured so
thatthe molten metal will not be chilled in being carried from the melting pot to the joint and
shall bebrought to a proper temperature so that when stirred it will show a rapid change of color.

one continuous pour filling of the entire joint space with solid lead. Spongy or
imperfectlyfilledjointsshallbebuntoutandrepaired.
The joint runner shall fit snugly against the face of the socket and the outside of the
pipeshall be dammed with clay to from a pouring lip to provide for filling the joint flush with the
faceandtothetopof thesocket.
The jointed is done by first caulking in spun yam, then filling the remainder of the
jointspace by running in molten lead, taking care that no dross enters the joint and then
thoroughlycaulkingthelead.Thespunyamshallbeusedtocenterthespigotinthesocketandtopreventth
eflowofmoltenlead intotheboreof thepipe.
After the lead has been run into the joint the lead shall be thoroughly caulked. Caulking
ofjoints shall be done after a convenient length of the pipes has been laid and leaded. The
leadingring shall first be removed and any lead outside the socket shall be removed with a flat
chisel andthen joint caulked removed with a flat chisel and then the joint caulked around three
times withcaulkingtoolsofincreasingthicknessandhammerof2kg.WeightLeadrunjointsshall
bepreferably finished 3 mm behind the socket face. The joints shall not be covered till the pipe
linehas been tested under specified hydrostatic test pressure, though the rest of the pipe line
shouldbe covereduptopreventexpansionandcontractionduetovariationintemperature.
