2.4 The water cement ratios shall not more than those specified in the above table.

3.0 Workmanship:
3.1 Proportioning:Proportioningshallbedoneby volume, except cementwhich shall
bemeasured in terms of bags of 50 Kg. weight. The volume of one such bag being taken
as0.0342Cu.Meter.Boxes of suitablesizesshallbeusedfor measuring sand
aggregate.Thesizeoftheboxes(internal)shallbe 35cms x 25 cms.and40cms
deep.Whitemeasuring the aggregate and sand, the box shall be filled without shaking
orhammering.Theproportioningofsandshallbeonthebasisofitsdryvolumeandincaseofdamps
and,allowancesforbulkageshallbe made.
3.2.1 Forallwork,concreteshallbemixedin
amechanicalmixerwhichalongwithotheraccessoriesshallbekeptinfirstclassworkingcondition
andsomaintainedthroughoutthe construction. Measured quantity of aggregate, sand,
cement required for each batchshall be poured into the drum of the mechanical mixer
while it is continuously running.After about half a minute of dry mixing, measured
quantity of water required for eachbatch of concrete mix shallbeaddedgraduallyand
mixing continued foranotheroneand half a minute. Mixing shall be continued till materials
are uniformly distributed anduniform color of the entire mass is obtained and each
individual particle of the
coarseaggregateshowscompletecoatingofmortarcontainingitsproportionateamountofcem
ent. In no case shall the mixing be done for less than 2 minutes after all
ingredientshavebeenputintothemixer.
3.2.2 When hand mixing is permitted by the Engineer-in-charge for small jobs or for
certainother reasons, it shall be done on the smooth watertight platform large enough to
allowefficient turning over the ingredients of concrete before and after adding water.
Mixingplatformshallbeso arranged thatno foreign materialgets mixed with concrete
nordoes the mixing water flow out. Cement in required number of bags shall be placed in
auniform layer on top of the measured quantity of fine and coarse aggregate, which
shallalsobespread in alayer of uniformthickness on
themixingplatform.Drycoarseandfineaggregateandcementshallthenbemixedthoroughlybyt
urningovertogetamixturetouniformcolor.Specifiedquantityofwatershallthenbeaddedgradu
allythrougharose-canandthemassturnedovertillamixofrequiredconsistencyisobtained. In
hand mixing quantity of cement shall be increased by 10 percent above thatspecified.
3.2.3 Mixerswhichhavebeenoutofuseformorethan30minutesshallbethoroughlycleaned before
putting in a new batch. Unless otherwise agreed to by the Engineer-in-
chargethefirstbatchofconcretefromthemixtureshallcontainonlytwothirdsofnormal
quantity of coarse aggregate. Mixing plant shall be thoroughly cleaned
beforechangingfromonetypeofcementtoanother.
3.3 Consistency:
3.3.1 Thedegreeofconsistencywhichshalldependuponthenatureoftheworkandmethodsofvibratio
nofconcrete,shallbedeterminedbyregularslumptestsinaccordancewith
I.S. 1199-1959. The slump of 10mm to 25mm. shall be adopted when vibrators are
usedand 80mmwhen vibratorsarenotused.
3.4 Inspection:
3.4.1 Contractorshall give theEngineer-in-charge duenoticebeforeplacinganyconcreteintheforms
to permit him to inspect andaccept the false work andforms as to
theirstrength,alignment,andgeneralfitnessbutsuchinspectionshallnotrelievethecontractoro
fhisresponsibilityforthesafetyofmen,machinery,materialsandforresultsobtained.Immediat
elybeforeconcreting,allformsshallbethoroughlycleaned.
3.4.2 Centering design and its erection shall be got approved from the Engineer-in-
charge.Onecarpenterwithhelpershallinvariablybekeptpresentthroughouttheperiod
ofconcreting.Movementoflabourandotherpersonsshallbetotallyprohibitedforreinforcemen
tlaidinposition.foraccesstodifferentparts,suitablemobileplatforms

shall be provided so that steel reinforcement in position is not disturbed. For
ensuringpropercover,mortarblocksofsuitablesizeshallbeprovidedsothatsteelreinforcement
inpositionisnotdisturbed.Forensuringpropercover,mortarblocksofsuitablesizeshall be cast
and tied to the reinforcement. Timber kapachi or metal pieces shall not beusedforthis
3.5 Transportingandlaying:
3.5.1 The method of transporting and placing concrete shall be as approved. Concrete shall
beso transported and placed that no contemination, segregation or loss of its
constituentmaterialtakesplace.
All form wok shall be cleaned and made free from standing water, dust, show or ice
immediatelybeforeplacingofconcrete.
No concrete shall be placed in any part of the structure until the approval of the Engineer-in-
chargehas been obtained.
3.5.2 Concreting shall proceed continuously over the area between construction joints.
Freshconcreteshallnotbe placed against concrete which has been in position
formorethan30 minutes unless a proper construction joint is formed. Concrete shall
compacted in itsfinal position within 30 minutes of its discharge from the mixer. Except
where otherwiseagreed to by the Engineer-in-charge concrete shall be deposited n
horizontal layers to acompacted depth of not more than 0.45 meter when internal
vibrators are used and notexceeding 0.30 meterinallothercases.
3.5.3 Unless otherwiseagreed to bytheEngineer-in-charge, concrete shallnot be
droppedintoplacefroma height exceeding
meters.Whentrunkingorchutesareusedtheyshallbe kept close and used in such a wayas to
avoid segregation. When concreting hasto be resumed on a surface which has hardened, it
shall be roughened, swept clean,thoroughly wetted and covered with a 13 mm thick layer
of mortar composed of
cementandsandinthesameratioasintheconcretemixitself.This13mmlayerofmortarshallbefr
eshlymixedandplacedimmediatelybeforeplacingofnewconcrete.Whereconcretehasnotfully
hardened,alllaitanceshallberemovedbyscrubbingthewetsurfacewithwireorbristlebrushes,c
arebeingtakentoavoiddislodgmentofanyparticles of coarse aggregate. The surface shall
then be thoroughly wetted, all free
waterremovedandthencoatedwithneatcementgrout.Thefirstlayerofconcretetobeplaced on
this surface shall not exceed 150 mm in thickness and shall be well
rammedagainstoldworkparticularattentionbeinggiventocornersandclosespots.
3.5.4 Allconcreteshallbecompactedtoproduceadensehomogeneousmasswiththeassistanceofvibr
ators,unless,otherwisepermittedbytheEngineer-in-
chargeforexceptionalcases,suchasconcretingunderwater,wherevibratorscannotbeused.Suf
ficient vibrators in serviceable conditionshall be kept at site so
thatspareequipmentisalwaysavailableintheeventofbreakdowns.
Concrete shall be judged to be compacted when the mortar fills the spaces between the
coarseaggregateandbeginstocreamuptoformanevensurface.Compactionshallbecompleted
beforetheinitialsetting starts i.e.within 30 minutes of addition ofwater
todrymixture.Duringcompaction,itshallbeobservedthatneedlevibratorsarenotappliedonrei
nforcementwhichislikelytodestroythebondbetweenconcreteandreinforcement.
3.6 Curing:Immediatelyaftercompaction,concreteshallbeprotectedfromweatherincluding rain,
running water, shocks, vibration, traffic, rapid temperature changes, frostand drying out
process. It shall be covered with wet sacking, hassain or other
similarabsorbantmaterialapproved,soonaftertheinitialsetandshallbekeptcontinuouslywetf
oraperiodofnotlessthan14daysfromthedateofplacement.Masonarywork

3.7 SamplingandTestingofconcrete:
3.7.1 Samplesfromfreshconcreteshallbetakenasper I.S.1199-1959 andcubesshallbemade, cured
and tested at 7 days or 28 days as per requirements in accordance with I.S.516-1959. A
random sampling procedure shall be adopted to ensure that each concretebatch shall
have a reasonable chance of being tested i.e. the sampling should be
spreadovertheentireperiodofconcretingandcoverallmixingunits.Theminimumfrequencyofs
amplingofconcreteofeachgradeshallbeinaccordancewith following:

NOTE : At least one sample shall be taken from each shift.Tentestspecimens shall be
madefromeachsample, five fortestingat7 daysand
theremainingfiveat28days.Thesamplesofconcreteshallbetakenoneachdayoftheconcretinga
sperabovefrequency. The number of specimens may be suitably increased as deemed
necessary bythe Engineer-in-charge when procedure of tests given above reveals a poor
quality ofconcreteandinotherspecialcases.
3.7.2 The average strength of the group of cubes cast for each day shall not be less than
thespecified cube strength of 150 Kg/Cm2at 28days.20%of the cubes castfor each
daymayhave value less than thespecified strength provided the lowestvalue is
notlessthan85%ofthespecifiedstrength.Iftheconcretemadeinaccordancewiththeproportion
sgivenforaparticulargrade,doesnotyieldthespecifiedstrength;suchconcrete
shallbeclassified as belongingto the appropriatelower grade. Concrete
madeinaccordancewith the proportions given for a particular grade shall not, however,
beplacedinahighergradeonthegroundthattheteststrengtharehigherthantheminimumspecif
3.8.1 The Engineer-in-charge shall be informed in advance by the contractor of his intention
tostrike the form work. While fixing the time for removal of form work, due
considerationshallbe given to local conditions, character for the structure, the weather
and othercondition that influence the setting of concrete and of the materials used in the
Innormalcircumstances(generallywheretemperaturesareabove200C)andwhereordinaryco
ncrete is used, forms maybe struck after expiryofperiodsspecified in
itemNo9.1(A)forrespectiveitemofformwork.
3.8.2 All form work shall be removed without causing any shock or vibration as would
damagethe concrete. Before the soffit and struts are removed, the concrete surface shall
beexposed,wherenecessaryinordertoascertainthattheconcretehassufficientlyhardened.Ce
nteringshallbegraduallyanduniformlyloweredinsuchmannerastopermittheconcretetotakes
tressesdueto its ownweightuniformlyandgradually.Where internal metal ties are
permitted, the or their removable parts shall be extractedwithout causing any damage to
the concrete and remaining holes filled with mortar. Nopermanently embedded metal
part shallhave less than 25 mm cover to the
finishedconcretesurface.Whereitisintendedtore-usetheformwork,itshallbecleanedand

made good to the satisfaction of the Engineer-in-charge. After removal of form work
andshuttering, the Executive Engineer shall inspect the work and satisfy by
randomchecksthatconcreteproducedisofgoodquality.
3.8.3 Immediatelyaftertheremovalofforms,allexposedboltsetc.,passingthroughthecement
concrete member and used for shuttering or anyotherpurposeshallbecutinside the cement
concrete member to a depth ofat least 25 mmbelowthesurfaceofthe concrete and the
resulting holes be filled by cement mortar. All fine caused by
formjoints,allcavitiesproducedbytheremovalofformtiesandallotherholesanddepressionsho
neycombspots,brokenedgesorcornersandotherdefectsshallbethoroughly cleaned,
saturated with water and carefully pointed and rendered true

Ifrockpockets/honeycombs intheopinionoftheEngineer-in-chargeareofsuchanextent or
character as to effectthestrengthofthestructuremateriallyor to
endangerthelifeofthesteelreinforcement,hemaydeclaretheconcretedefectiveand
requiretheremovalandreplacementoftheportionofthestructureaffected.
4.0 Modeofmeasurementandpayment:
4.1 Theconsolidatedcubicalcontentsofconcreteworkasspecifiedinitemshallbemeasured. The
concrete laid in excess of section shown on drawings or as directed
shallnotbemeasured.Nodeductionshallbemadefor–
(a) Ends of dis-similar materials such as joints, beams, posts, girders, rafters,
purlinetrusses,corbels andstepsetc.upto500Sq.Cm.insection.
(b) Openingupto0.1Sq.M.
4.2 Therateincludescostofallmaterials,labour,toolsandplantrequiredformixing,placing in
position, vibrating and compacting, finishing, as directed, curing and all otherincidental
expenses for producing concrete of specified strength. The rate excludes
thecostofformwork.
4.3 Therateshallbeforaunitofonecubicmeter.

entertained andthetenderwillnot be entitled subsequently to make may claim

(a) ) In theevent ofadiscrepancybetween description in words and figures
quotedbyatendererinthe ' rates' column, the description
inwordsshallprevail.
(b) ) In the event ofanerror occuringin the ' amount' column oftheschedule' B'
showing i temsof work, as a result of wrongmultiplicationoftheunit-
rateandquantity,theunits-rate shall beregardedas firm and multiplication
shall beamendedonthebasis oftherates.
(c) ) All errors in totalingin amount column and in carry forward
totalsshallbecorrected.
(d) ) Anyroundingoffofamountsagainst'items'or'totals'shallbeignored.

GENERAL SPECIFICATION

ofdisputefor unseen oroverlooked i temsthe decision of the city Engineer
shallbefinal. The contractor shall have to give site clean ofallrubbish
oncompletionofworkand have over the building with final finishing ofthework as
directed. Alltherejectedmaterials shall beremovedfrom site within 24 hours
bycontractoratthisrskandcost.
(3) ) For mixing mortar either for masonry orforplaster orfor any
otherpurposecontractor shall have to prepare through ofbiggersize and mix
themortarin the required proportion. In oncasehe shall be allowed to mix
themortareitheronfloororanyfinishedsurfaces.
Thecontractorshallhavetomakehisownarrangementforwaterrequiredfortheworkandshall
paythewaterchargesasperwatermeter.
(5) ) I fanyextra i tem crops up during the progress ofworkthe same shall
becarriedoutbythecontractor and heshallbe paid at the rate fixed by C. E. as
pertherateanalysisbasedoncurrentmarketrates.
(6) ) I finthe interest oftheCorporation i tis necessary to change either anysiteor
the design ofthepropose work the contractor shall carry out the
sameathisquotedrateswithout charges any extra and the contractor will have
tocarryout theworksand he will be paid at the rate quoted by him and no

lease holders, permit holder ormiddleman who satisfies
thecontractorastothelegalityofthesourceofpurchasebyhimonthesematerials.
(10) ) I ftheworki snot carried out within the specified t imelimit in clause no. 1the
penalty of0. 1 % per day of remaining work after Stipulated time l
imitandmaximum 10 % of remaining work for the entire period of delay
shallberecoveredfromtheimmediatebillspayabletothecontractor.
(11) ) Contractor hasto make his own arrangement for procurement of
steelandcement.
(12) ) Conditionaltenderwillnotbeaccepted.
