compaction is specified by pneumatic tampers at designed foundation
level shown on the drawings or the actual foundation level approved
and provided during excavation in case of structure pay line shall be
considered from actual foundation level, with slopes as per designed
foundation level or actual foundation level, whichever is lower.
However no extra payment shall be paid for the over excavation made
for the pipe line trench width as indicated in the respective drawings.
(d) Over excavation performed by the contractor for any purpose or
reasons, except for additional excavation as stated herein above or as
may be directed by the Engineer-In-Charge shall be rectified at the cost
of the contractor. Filling and compactions for such over excavation shall
also be done at the cost of the contractor.
(e) Lead specified for excavation shall be measured from the block of
m. of the foundation to the place of dumping as a straight line distance
i.e. the crow fly distance.
Measurement & Payment (Item -4)
(f) All items of excavation shall be measured and paid on cubic meter basis.
The quantity of excavation shall be computed from the L x B x D which
shall be taken as 3 m. grid points or closer interval in the foundation
area, at every change in strata like soil, soft rock etc. L x B x D shall be
taken and recorded. No payment shall be entertained for any excavation
beyond pay line. The rate shall include providing all the materials, tools,
plants and labour required for excavation.
(g) No extra rate shall be payable for excavation below design depth shown
on the drawings. No claim for extra rate shall be entertained for any
excavation that may be required to be done for widening or deepening
the foundations consequent upon lowering foundation below the level
shown on the drawings. The works so done will be paid at the tendered
rates of the item.
(h) The regradation for tail channel and approach for structures and
diversion of drains/nalls shall be according to the dimension and / or as
instructed by the Engineer-In-Charge.
(i) The rate of excavation includes the excavation processes, prescribed
lead and lifts, disposal of excavated stuff as stipulated in the
specifications, providing all tools, plant, machinery, labour and material,
preparation and maintenance of haul roads, transport of excavated
material to temporary stockpiles, rehandling of excavated material
temporarily deposited in stockpiles to disposal areas or the points of
final use, disposal of excavated waste materials, maintaining excavated
slopes and trenches including dewatering, if any etc. The cost of sorting
and stacking the useful excavated material above high flood levels will
not be paid extra and shall be deemed to have been included in the unit
rate of completed items of excavation.
(j) The rate also includes cost of all incidental operations required for
carrying out the work in accordance with the specifications.
(k) The measurement of item 4 shall be taken in cubic meter basis and
payment shall be made for the unit rate quoted in Bill of quantity.
Backfilling the foundation trenches around the structures etc with selected
excavated stuff including watering, ramming, compacting etc. complete. (By
(a) The type of material used for back-fill and the manner of depositing the
material shall be subject to approval of Engineer-In-Charge. As far as
practicable back fill material shall be obtained from the excavation for
structure or from adjacent canal excavation, or from excavation of other
ancillary works.
(b) Materials for the purpose shall be of approved quality. Any material which is
found inferior shall be rejected and the contractor shall remove such rejected
material from the site at his own cost. The material shall be collected on the
canal site approved by Engineer-In-Charge. The material shall be granular i.e.
sand and gravel in proportion 1:1. The material shall got approved from the
Engineer-In- Charge prior to collection, it shall be free from all rubbish, dust
and any organic materials as well as clods of black cotton soils.
(c) Backfill material shall contain no stones larger than 7.5 cm. size.
(d) The backfill material shall be placed to the line and grades as shown on
drawing or as prescribed in its paragraph or as directed by the Engineer-In-
(e) Backfill shall not be placed against retaining walls until the retaining wall is
cured adequately and is strong enough to take lateral pressure of the backfill.
Trimming of the sides of excavation against which the backfill is to be laid shall
be delayed until immediately prior to backfilling and any excessive drying of
the surface shall be conditioned properly and made adequately moist to avoid
potential desiccation of the rock or partly compacted/consolidated materials.
(f) The backfill material shall be placed carefully and spread in uniform layers of
not more than 15 cm thickness. The backfill shall be brought up as uniformly as
practicable on both sides of walls and all sides of structures to prevent unequal
loading. The backfill material shall be placed at about the same elevation on
both sides of the pipe portions of the structures and culverts and difference in
elevation shall not exceed 15 cm. at any time. The contractor shall be
responsible for providing adequate earth cover above pipe to prevent damage
due to loads of construction equipments.
(g) If a haul is built over a pipe, all backfill around and over the pipe shall be placed
to uniform surface and no humps or depressions shall be permitted at the pipe
(h) Backfill placement and compaction around structures shall be restricted until
the structure is complete.
(i) Backfill placement and compaction above the lining key shall be done as per
drawings on completion of lining key.
(j) Compaction around the structure and over the lining key shall be done by
pneumatic rammers in thin layers.
(k) In cases, the barrels of canal syphon, drainage syphon, super passage,
foundations of cross regulator and other structures are proposed on the
natural ground or its approaches are proposed on the compacted backfill made
up ground the soil of natural ground and the embankment on which the barrel
syphon, foundations and other components of structure rests shall be prepared
as per canal embankment. There after the actual barrel or other concrete
masonry structure work shall be started as per instructions of the Engineer-In-
Charge. The embankment work shall be carried out with all precautions
necessary from safety requirement and as per the method specified in the
normal embankment technique.
Compaction of Backfilling :
When compacting the soil against steep rock, abutment walls of masonry or concrete
structures, the construction surface of embankment shall be sloped away from the
rock or masonry or concrete structure leaving a minimum distance of 0.6 metre and
at an inclination of 3:1. Rollers shall not be used close to structures as structural
damage is very likely more particularly when structures have not been fully cured.
The size and weight of equipment will depend on nature of material, the height and
load assumed in design of structure. The backfill close to the structure up to the
rolled layer shall be compacted in suitable uniform layers, using, pneumatic/hand
tampers as appropriate for dry density of at least 90% of Standard Proctor. The
moisture content of the earth fill placed against the rock or the structure shall be on
higher side on OMC by about 2% or so, to allow it to be compacted in to all
irregularities of the rock, profused watering shall be done to pervious materials
(sand) before compaction as per instruction of the Engineer-In-Charge. Compaction
at junction of earthwork and backfill around the structure shall be carried out with
special care without claiming any extra cost.
Measurement & Payment (Item 5)
(a) All items of excavation shall be measured and paid on cubic meter basis. The
quantity of excavation shall be computed from the L x B x D which shall be
taken as 3 m. grid points or closer interval in the foundation area, at every
change in strata like soil, soft rock etc. L x B x D shall be taken and recorded. No
payment shall be entertained for any excavation beyond pay line. The rate shall
include providing all the materials, tools, plants and labour required for
(b) No extra rate shall be payable for excavation below design depth shown on the
drawings. No claim for extra rate shall be entertained for any excavation that
may be required to be done for widening or deepening the foundations
consequent upon lowering foundation below the level shown on the drawings.
The works so done will be paid at the tendered rates of the item.
(c) The regradation for tail channel and approach for structures and diversion of
drains/nalls shall be according to the dimension and / or as instructed by the
Engineer-In-Charge.
(d) The rate of excavation includes the excavation processes, prescribed lead and
lifts, disposal of excavated stuff as stipulated in the specifications, providing all
tools, plant, machinery, labour and material, preparation and maintenance of
haul roads, transport of excavated material to temporary stockpiles, rehandling
of excavated material temporarily deposited in stockpiles to disposal areas or
the points of final use, di6sposal of excavated waste materials, maintaining
excavated slopes and trenches including dewatering, if any etc. The cost of
sorting and stacking the useful excavated material above high flood levels will
not be paid extra and shall be deemed to have been included in the unit rate of
completed items of excavation.
(e) The rate also includes cost of all incidental operations required for carrying out
the work in accordance with the specifications.
