How to Register on GeM: Step-by-Step Guide for Government Vendors

Over 67 lakh sellers have registered on GeM as of early 2024. If you sell products or services that any government office might need, registration on gem.gov.in is non-negotiable. The process is free, fully online, and takes about 20 minutes if your documents are ready.

What You Need Before You Start

Keep these documents handy before opening the registration page. Missing even one will stall the process.

• PAN card — must match the business entity name exactly
• GSTIN — active GST registration is mandatory for most categories
• Aadhaar — linked to the authorized signatory's mobile number
• Bank account details — cancelled cheque or passbook first page
• ITR for the last financial year — not always required at registration but needed for bidding
• Udyam Registration — if you're an MSME (strongly recommended for EMD exemption and purchase preference)

Step-by-Step Registration

1. Go to gem.gov.inand click “Sign Up” → “Seller”
2. Enter your Aadhaar number. An OTP goes to the linked mobile number. This step verifies your identity.
3. Fill in the business details — entity type (proprietorship, partnership, company, LLP), PAN, GSTIN, registered address.
4. Add bank account details. GeM runs a penny-drop verification, so the account must be active.
5. Upload supporting documents — PAN, GST certificate, cancelled cheque.
6. Select your primary product or service categories. You can add more later, but choose accurately now. GeM has 11,000+ product and 330+ service categories.
7. Submit for verification. GeM typically verifies within 2–5 working days.

After Approval: Listing Products

Once approved, you need to list your products in the GeM catalog before buyers can find you. Each listing needs product specifications, pricing, images, and compliance declarations.

• OEM sellers list directly under their brand
• Resellers need an authorization letter from the OEM
• Service providers list under service categories with defined SLAs

Pricing on GeM is transparent. Your listed price is visible to all buyers. For bids and reverse auctions, you'll quote separately.

Common Issues During Registration

• PAN-GSTIN mismatch — the legal name on PAN must match the GST registration. Even a minor difference (Pvt vs Private) causes rejection.
• Aadhaar OTP failure — ensure your Aadhaar is linked to an active mobile number. Update it at the nearest Aadhaar centre if needed.
• Bank verification failure — the account holder name must match the entity name. Joint accounts or personal accounts won't work for companies.
• Wrong category selection — don't list in categories where you can't deliver. GeM penalizes sellers who accept orders and fail to supply.

Tips for Getting Approved Fast

• Use a business email, not a generic Gmail. It builds credibility.
• Upload clear, legible scans of all documents. Blurry uploads get sent back.
• If you're an MSME, upload your Udyam certificate during registration itself — it's verified automatically.
• Keep your GST return filings up to date. GeM checks GST compliance status.
