Udyam registration replaced the old MSME/UAM registration in July 2020. It's Aadhaar-based, completely free, and the single documentthat unlocks EMD exemption, purchase preference, and reserved item access across all government tenders. If you're an MSME and don't have it, you're leaving money on the table.
Classification Thresholds
- Micro — investment up to ₹1 crore and turnover up to ₹5 crore
- Small — investment up to ₹10 crore and turnover up to ₹50 crore
- Medium — investment up to ₹50 crore and turnover up to ₹250 crore
Both investment and turnover criteria must be met. Classification is linked to ITR and GST data — no self-declaration for financials.
Tender Benefits by Category
- EMD exemption — applies to micro and small enterprises on GeM and CPPP tenders. Saves 2–3% of tender value in blocked capital.
- Purchase preference (15% rule) — if your bid is within 15% of L1 and L1 is not an MSE, you get to match L1 and win
- Reserved items — 358 items exclusively for MSEs. Non-MSE bids are disqualified.
- Free tender set cost — many departments waive tender document purchase fees for registered MSEs
- Interest subsidy — banks offer concessional rates to Udyam-registered enterprises for working capital
How to Register
- Visit udyamregistration.gov.in
- Enter Aadhaar number of the proprietor/managing partner
- Link PAN and GST. System auto-pulls ITR and GST turnover data.
- Select NIC code for your business activity
- Submit. Certificate is generated instantly with a permanent Udyam Registration Number (URN).
- Cost: Zero. No renewal required. No intermediary needed.
Important Notes
- Old UAM registrations have expired — migrate to Udyam immediately if you haven't
- Udyam is linked to PAN, so you cannot have multiple Udyam registrations for the same PAN
- Classification is automatically updated based on ITR filing — if turnover crosses ₹50 crore, you move from small to medium
- Medium enterprises get fewer tender benefits than micro/small — the 25% quota and purchase preference apply to micro and small only
